First Peoples Principles of Learning (FPPL)

Recognizing and implementing the First Peoples’ Principles of Learning into my teaching is a way of recognizing the teaching and learning that has occurred on these lands since time immemorial. These principles remind us that learning is not only academic but also spiritual, emotional, and connected to land, culture, and community. These principles honour Indigenous ways of knowing and help address the injustices of colonial history by centring Indigenous voices in education. Through storytelling, relationship-building, and respect for diverse perspectives, we take meaningful steps toward reconciliation. Embracing these principles encourages all learners to reflect, listen, and engage in education that fosters equity, healing, and mutual understanding for a better future. I hope to implement these in my classroom through the medicine wheel, circle of courage stories that highlight the past but also celebrate indigenous peoples’ resilience and their successes.
